My first two books did nada. I ended up paying the publishers.
I made so many mistakes in my first successful business I'm almost embarrassed to recount them.
One of these days, I'm going to publish a book of all the pictures I did not take. It is going to be a huge hit.
It was more exciting to get that first book published, I think.
'Britain's Royal Families' became my first published book, in 1989, from The Bodley Head, and the rest of the story is - dare I say it? - history!
Especially on 'Taken,' 'Taken' was not a big success the day of its release. It was released in France first, and it didn't do bad, but not as good as it did in the U.S.
The best advice that was given to me was that I had to be 10 times smarter, braver and more polite to be equal. So I did.
For several days after my first book was published, I carried it about in my pocket and took surreptitious peeps at it to make sure the ink had not faded.
As lifelong fans of comic books, Dan Didio and myself, we definitely have our own takes on what make for successful comics and the kind of comics that we want to publish.
