All I write about is what's happened to me and to people I know, and the better I know them, the more likely they are to be written about.
Everything that I write about is a kernel of something that probably happened to me or one of my writers that I've co-opted and made it seem like it's mine.
My writing is authentic, and whatever happens in my life is what I write about.
I write about my life and my own experience, but I also write about things that I have no knowledge of whatsoever.
Writers - all writers, even screenwriters - like to make their mark. I don't think many screenwriters can write. They pass as writers.
A lot of my songs are written prophetically: I write something, and then I make it happen.
But what I hope for from a book - either one that I write or one that I read - is transparency. I want the story to shine through. I don't want to think of the writer.
I don't outline or plan ahead when I write a novel. The more I know about what's going to happen, the less interesting it is to me; and if it's less interesting for me, it will be that way for the reader.
Everything I know, I write about. My only research is what I did.
