The comedian can put the punchline out there, but it's the audience that receives it - and has to get it.
Behind the proscenium arch, you can't always hear what people in the audience are saying.
I used to be afraid of looking at the audience.
I've been afraid of people playing their life away with too many toys.
I need to know who the audience are in any particular play. It's no good forgetting that they're there.
Comedians don't laugh. They're too busy analyzing why it's funny or not.
If you're going to act and do this for a living, you want to play something that the audience didn't expect.
You pay your money, you take your choice. I get the audience my language attracts and I lose the ones it repels.
And that, to me, is the main attraction to comics. It's an avenue to say what you want to say.
