I enjoy doing the research of nonfiction; that gives me some pleasure, being a detective again.
I never direct myself, because I don't like working with me. I would punch me in the mouth if I had to take my direction.
Writer/directors are, for me, the most inspiring people to work for because they are the person on set that knows the answer to all the questions. They have the most invested in the project because they've been with it from conception.
It would have been very easy to drift into writing a non-fiction book so by taking it away from Nottingham I forced myself to imagine much more of it.
I don't go to regular music festivals because I tend to run in the opposite direction wherever there's big crowds.
I have discovered that for me - now, maybe it doesn't work for everybody - for me, it is much more effective to arrive at any situation as a man from Mars than to try to fit in.
Movies feel like work, and reading fiction feels like work, whereas reading nonfiction feels like pleasure.
The things that I've enjoyed most are not really science fiction. They are not much fun to make because there are so many toys involved. They are fun for directors who like toys, like Ridley Scott, but they are not a lot of fun to make. A lot of hanging around, changing this and that.
No one in my family was a reader of literary fiction. So, I didn't have encouragement, but I didn't have discouragement, because I don't think anybody knew what that meant.
