I missed so much of the Swinging Sixties by working. From 1961 to 1969, I got up at 4.30 A.M., a car came for me at 5.30 A.M., and I was taken to our studio at Teddington or Elstree, and we filmed until I got home at 9.30 P.M., five days a week.
My father was a drill sergeant, and I've always had that mentality drilled into me of 'you've got to do better, you've got to do better.' I just try to listen to the characters. That's what works for me.
When I said I didn't have a cent, I didn't. I used to get annoyed with people who said they were broke when they had five dollars.
Dad made it to Gold Shield Detective, so he always busted Robin, my oldest brother, and me. Always got caught, whatever we were doing.
With three younger brothers, we were always very competitive and combative. But my mother always says I get the drive from her.
My dad had given my sister and I our starter car, a red, old 1985 Chevy Blazer. It was so beat up, the taillights would fall off, and we would use red duct tape.
My family wanted church to be a place where we all went together. My dad was always traveling, and my mom was always working. School is where I did Bible classes and studied God.
The great actors we had came from the actor-manager theaters. Not only did they create a team, they were the generals working with the soldiers.
Death makes angels of us all and gives us wings where we had shoulders smooth as ravens claws.
