I choose movies, I never choose roles. I look at the script. I look at the director. I look at the other actors - and then the role.
My sense is, I think it's okay for directors to do movies that speak to other work in their career.
I've never been able to learn from other people's mistakes - I'm not that smart - so I usually learn by trial by fire.
I write books to find out about things.
When I write a screenplay, and when I direct, I always pull lines out.
People think that because I write about India I must be trying to portray India in a way.
I love to act because I love trying on other people's skin.
Writers are just like other people, except slightly more obsessed.
I wanted to write and direct movies and not be forced to adapt them from a bestselling book.
