People forget that the more we know about the world - about people, cultures, and about life - the stronger we are as actors because the more we can bring to our characters.

I don't think an actor's job is to be recognized. I think an actor's job is to facilitate the writing in a way that changes the way people think. No other business does that.
Because I came to acting quite late, I kind of think one of the few attributes that I do have is that I try to be honest with the character, with the writing. I'm not a tricksy actor; I'm not exactly a scenery-chewing kind of actor.
I love writing for other actors, women of African descent and people who are generally underrepresented.
Something great about 'The Last Ship' is that it employs a lot of actors, and a lot of actors are getting work because of it, and all these people are in here, and all these artists are working together.
I'm usually too shy to write on planes because I assume that everyone on board is as nosy as I am and will look over my shoulder and read what I'm writing.
I like to write first-person because I like to become the character I'm writing.
Pretending to be other people is my game and that to me is the essence of the whole business of acting.
