I'm proud of my mentors. Ray Charles is the strongest influence on me as a singer.
I sort of feel like music saved my life when I was young. This is the one thing that I knew I was good at.
I met Ray Charles at 14, and he was 16. But he was like a hundred years older than me.
My number one thing to work on is not being reactive - but appropriateness doesn't come easily to me sometimes.
You know, I consistently change in my own life so the roles I'm suitable for also change, and that's a really nice thing about this profession.
If I had to name one thing that differentiates me from the other women, it's that I get free stuff at restaurants or get discounts.
One thing as a leader - you don't say something to say something. When you actually see something and need to talk to a guy, that's when you say it. It will come naturally.
Once I discovered music and that you don't need to just use words but can add a growl to the melody, that releases so much more. I never want to make music for any other reason.
Music can lift the spirit; it can make you cry. Soldiers have marched into battle to music. It's a powerful thing.
