I write the kinds of novels I like to read, where the setting is rendered with love and care.
Part of my job is to read the paper, watch C-Span and show things that haven't been shown or were buried.
I write plays about things that I can't resolve in my mind. I try to root things out.
I started writing to please myself, a story I would like to read, and that is still true.
I would never write a sentence that didn't have a nice rhythm, or at least I wouldn't leave it to be published like that. It seems to me that prose mustn't be prosaic.
People ask me all the time would I like to still be playing? No. I'm glad I played when I played.
If I would need to make a prediction I still believe Kaplan's scenario is very plausible.
The 1970s seemed particularly playful. People were trying to make work that couldn't be sold.
I do have some theatrical background. I've written plays and seen plays and read plays. But I also read novels. One thing I don't read is screenplays.
