I write songs about real things... The subject dictates the mood and it goes from there, really.
I write songs about stuff that I can't really get past personally - and then I write a song about it and I feel better.
Every time I write a song I feel really lucky and kind of surprised. Not surprised that I wrote it, but just surprised that things exist that you don't know about.
I write songs about fat girls and about men who run off to Mexico.

I don't really have a metaphor for how I write, but it kinda feels like chipping away at a big dark object that I can't really see.
I listen to everything and find parts about a song in the lyrics/melody/chords/production that I like and can be inspired by when I write my next song.
