Action is drama. If we cannot make the audience laugh, smile or cry with us, we are not actors.
Any audience that gets a laugh out of me gets it while I'm facing them.
I'm not asking actors to act. I'm asking them to behave. I want to see their being, not how they can fake it.
When actors are talking, they are servants of the dramatist. It is what they can show the audience when they are not talking that reveals the fine actor.
I've learnt that there's acting for film, acting for theatre, and acting for an audition.
The thing I like most about books is that anybody can afford them. They have an innate valuelessness.
I couldn't care less about actors' trailers and food on sets and stuff like that - I just want to act.
When actors are being defensive and defending their position, that is when you get less than good acting.
As a director, I also get to sit and watch actors and learn from them in a way that I don't get to do when I'm just acting.
