What really happened was one day I decided to write a new kind of play.
I really pulled back on my career when the kids were young and my husband and I made a pact never to work while the other one was.
What bothered me was playing one-dimensional parts in films which were really about, 'Boy Meets Girl,' 'Will Boy Get Girl?'
It's barely OK for me to be dressed up as a black guy. But part of me kind of enjoys provoking people.
When I end up yelling, it's not really deliberate. It's usually out of some moment of passion or frustration or real desire to get unstuck.
People speculate or think what they want to think, but it's been really fun for me to kind of explore what I want to explore.
I know it can be difficult for parents, but I really do believe that kids need to play the predominant role in the choices that go into their own space.
It was always theater for me. But part of that came out of the fact that I was always acting out as a kid. I was the kid who didn't play well with others.
It's nice when I get offered small parts. But I really think that 'SNL' is what my skill set is best designed for.
