One of the great things about being an older person is that I am very aware of the scope of the work and the historical sense of it. It's bigger than me.
When I am working on a movie, all I want to talk about is the movie. All I want to be with are the movie people. It's like a clan. If I'm asked to people's houses for dinner, I hate to go, because they'll talk about other things.
You have to insulate yourself - I'm talking about from everything, people can be talking to you and you won't hear 'em - that's how you write a song. And I haven't been able to do that over here 'cause I'm so busy and then, when I am off, I want to get away from music.
Over the years, people I've met have often asked me what I'm working on, and I've usually replied that the main thing was a book about Dresden.
I don't take myself too seriously, or I at least try not to, and I want to encourage other people to live that way because it's a much better way to go about your life.
I know where I'm going and I have told the French. I am sure if hope is there, we will be able to put France back on its feet... to live better in five years than we do today.
There is no better way to manage than by walking around. Autocracy doesn't work. Talk to people in their offices, find out what's on their minds.
It is not actual suffering but the taste of better things which excites people to revolt.
Over the years, I've become barraged by comments from people, such as, 'Beam me up, Scotty!' and I became defensive. I felt they were derisive and engendered an attitude. I am grateful for the success, but didn't want to be mocked.
